When we set up a Database we use several different Data Types.

  • The Data type Text is used where we will be typing in names, letters, numbers or symbols.

  • The Data type Number is used where we are typing in numbers.

  • The Data type Currency is used for money transactions (It automatically inserts a £ sign).

  • The Data type Date Time is used where dates or times are used.

  • The Data type Auto Number is a special field that increases by one each time you enter a record

  • The Data type Memo is a field with variable length.

We use different data types for many reasons, one of which is in case the person using the database makes a mistake, and for example tries to put a number in where the date should be. The computer would then be able to pick up the error and warn the operator that there was a problem. This is called Validation and you will see how we set this up on the next page.
